Chicago Transportation
Chicago is the centre of the transport network of the USA, a city that has grown thanks to its unique connections with both the west and east coasts of the country, and proximity to the canals that connect it with the Mississippi and the Gulf of Mexico. The city has been at the heart of industry ever since it first developed as a trading post, and its excellent connections with the rest of the world are reflected in the ease with which you can find your way around the city.
Chicago Transportation is comprehensive, and there are plenty of ways of getting around. If you are visiting the city as a tourist, then the chances are that you will probably use taxis for most of your short trips. Chicago’s taxis are all well marked with a light, and offer metered services throughout the city. Typically short trips from one shopping area or from the main city centre hotels to the entertainment districts will cost less than $15, although you should always allow for at least 10% for a tip.
Chicago has a comprehensive local train network that runs on elevated tracks through most of the main city areas and principal suburbs, as well as extending as far as some of the summer towns along the lake front. The “El” is great for short day trips, and you can buy a ticket on the platform for most of the destinations that you would want to use.
There are also plenty of buses within the city of Chicago transportation network, and these run regularly day and night on specific routes. The buses are great value for money, and generally the cheapest way of getting from one area to another. They all carry a sign telling you their destination and route number, and these are backed up by information on the stop.
If you are planning a day trip outside the city limits and don’t want to bother with Chicago car hire, then a great way of seeing the small towns along the Illinois coastline of Lake Michigan is a boat trip. Chicago transportation services offer a number of different boat services that run along the city’s extensive waterfront and further affield. Some of these services are seasonal, only operating in the summer, but they offer fantastic views of the iconic Chicago skyline from the water.
